Classroom Etiquette

For Our Dancers

  1. Come prepared. This includes the appropriate dress, shoes, and hair for participating in your class. Leave dangling or sharp-edged jewelry at home or in your bag.

  2. Leave food and drinks (unless closed water bottle) out of the dance space.

  3. NO GUM in the dance space.

  4. Never wear dance shoes outside the studio or wear Street Shoes inside the studio space.

  5. Before stepping onto the dance floor with tap shoes, check your shoes for loose screws.

  6. Keep your cell phone on vibrate. You have no use for your device during class.

  7. Please do not arrive late. If this cannot be avoided, enter the class very quietly.

  8. Please do not leave class early. If you cannot avoid making an early exit, talk to the teacher before class. If your exit is an emergency, do so as quickly and discreetly as possible.

  9. Do not talk – not even a whisper – while the teacher is talking.

  10. Be attentive at all times. Help class move along for everyone by staying attentive in line as you wait your turn.

  11. Pay attention, participate and follow your teacher’s directions. Listen before asking questions. When you do ask questions, make sure that they are necessary and relevant.

  12. Approach your class and activities in your class with a good, positive attitude. It helps you and everyone else in your class to learn more quickly and accomplish more.

  13. Never sit down unless you are instructed to do so.

  14. Watch your language, even when you mess up. The dance studio is no place for expressing yourself inappropriately.

  15. Be respectful of others. Allow them the same opportunity you have to learn and participate and space to do it in. The best way to achieve this is to exhibit the Golden Rule at all times.

  16. Respect the dance studio/space by keeping it clean and neat. Pick up after yourself – trash that you generate or that you see. Make sure your clothes and other personal items are neat and in the appropriate place when you’re in class and when you’re not.

  17. Don’t use things that are not yours or that you don’t have permission to use. Do not turn things on, off, up, or down in the space without express permission.

  18. Use good posture. Don’t slouch or hang on the barre (or anywhere else) and be aware of negative body language (like folded arms). After all, dance is about using your body to express a beautiful art form.

  19. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.  Your dance teachers are there to help you become a better dancer!  Be sure to ask for clarification when necessary. Ask questions by raising your hand and waiting for the teacher to call on you. This will help when you are confused to improve and progress as a dancer.

  20. Try your very best. Give 110% always. If you realize you are in a dance class that’s above your skill level, never walk out of a class or sit down in frustration!  Hang in there and try your best!  No one will fault you for that. Practice makes PROGRESS!

    For Our Parents

    1. BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS.

    2. Please do not converse verbally or physically with your child through the windows.
Tapping on the glass, standing close to it, having a sibling bang on it for attention, or having a conversation with your student through the glass is non-effective to their learning process. Please allow your dancer’s teacher the opportunity to teach your child and the others all of the wonderful things that come with a dance class, including how to listen to their teacher. If your child is being disruptive, allow the teacher to make behavior corrections first. We will always come get you if need be.

    3. Parents make sure you allow the dance teacher to do their job!
If you have a question or comment, feel free to talk to the teacher through an appointment or through e-mail.

    4. Waiting in the waiting areas or watching quietly through the blinds; doors are kept closed and blinds are kept slightly turned to preserve the focus of the classroom environment.

    5. Standing away from the viewing window if it becomes obvious that students are being distracted. Not letting younger children stand and hit the viewing window.

    6. Making sure your child has used the restroom before entering the studio.

    7. Have your dancer(s) ready for class before entering the classroom.

    8. Please let the office know in advance, if possible, if a student will be absent.

    9. Please have your children sit quietly while waiting. The waiting area is also a homework area for many dancers.

    10. Please ensure your children never run or scream in the studio, waiting areas, or parking lot.

    11. If your child needs to leave class early, please let the teacher know before class. That way the teacher can signal the dancer to exit quietly, rather than disrupting the entire class.
